The Asymmetrical Ones
An ode to mastectomy survivors, with apologies to Steve Jobs' The Crazy Ones
by Kate Wilcox
Here’s to the Asymmetrical Ones. The Unbalanced. The Off-kilter. The Unparallelled. The ones who stick out under a cashmere sweater, but mostly on the one side. They turn heads in parking lots and shopping malls not just because they are extraordinary, but because they are...curious.
They disrupt the equilibrium, break the pattern, and capture the wondering eye. They're unsnapped, unbuttoned, and off the hook. They're the exceptions that prove the rules. They’ve never been fond of bikini tops, but they’re not afraid to try one on just for grins. They might even pose for a photo, if you get on their good side.
You can admire them, tease them, taunt them, or buy them dinner. But the one thing you can’t do is figure them out. Oh, and you can’t touch them either. You need a special license for that.
They might not be crazy enough to think they can change the world, or even make a small dent in the universe. But they're survivors, they persist, and the world would be crazy not to be curious about them.
