New book celebrates "tiny canvases"
March 27, 2017, Marina, CA—A new coffee-tables art book by Marina author and photographer, Kate Wilcox, celebrates the imaginative world of beer bottle art. It showcases the beautiful, funny, ironic, and otherwise remarkable labels that all too often get overlooked or simply peeled off the bottles absentmindedly at the bar.
These tiny canvases deserve some love! And The Art of Beer: ABCs of Beer Bottle Art, Beach Edition features more than 200 of them from nearly 100 brewers around the world, including Stone, Deschutes, Sqauatters, Speakeasy, Sierra Nevada, Lost Coast, Mendocino, Anchor, Redhook, Boston, Pyramid, Wasatch, Dogfish Head, Baltic, Shmaltz, and Wychwood.
It's the Beach Edition, so it combines photos of beer bottles with coastal images of California, Oregon, and Belize. And it’s an ABC book, so you know it’s friendly and consumable. Like beer!
You don’t have to be a beer lover to enjoy this book. But if you do love beer, you’re sure to find many of your favorite labels and brewers represented here.
About the collection
The Art of Beer: ABCs of Beer Bottle Art, Beach Edition introduces the Whet Whistle Bottle Collection: An accidental collection of more than 1,600 beer bottles gently consumed and carefully preserved over the past four decades. The collector, who wishes to remain anonymous, began saving beer bottles as travel souvenirs. Over the years, he added bottles from brewers far and wide, and soon, the collection commandeered the better part of a small storage unit.
Lacking a proper Man Cave in which to display the bottles, and hoping they might start earning their keep, the collector decided to share the collection in a book. And after raising a pint or two, he green-lighted the ABC format. The result is 26 still-life panels that celebrate the art of beer. Each panel features up to 11 bottles with 2 things in common: They stand out as excellent designs, and they start with the same letter of the alphabet. For instance, the letter B features Big Daddy, Black & Brew, and Buzzard Breath among others. Hobgoblin, Hoppy Face, and Hop Rising join forces under the letter H. And the letter M showcases perennial favorites, Mud Slinger, Maudite, and Moose Drool.
Today, the collection continues to grow, especially on weekends, holidays, and special occasions such as Tuesday.

Photographer takes bottle collection to the beach
March 28, 2016, Marina, CA—Marina photographer, Kate Wilcox, has a new way to recycle beer bottles. She photographs them, catalogs them, and combines them with background images to create compelling composites that celebrate the real art of beer: the illustrations on the labels. These composite images are presented in a new art book, The Art of Beer: ABCs of Beer Bottle Art, Beach Edition.
This 70-page picture book, suitable for coffee tables, bar tops, and man caves, is being funded on Kickstarter and is the first in The Art of Beer Series. The series is intended to showcase the beautiful, funny, ironic, and otherwise remarkable labels that all too often go unnoticed, or simply get peeled off the bottles absent-mindedly at the bar.
Why Beach Edition?
Like a trip to the beach, this book is a carefree leisurely romp. It’s an intimate arrangement of beer bottle art, collected like shells at low tide, and presented in the friendly consumable format of an ABC book. Also, the background images were taken at or near the beach, so when you hold the book up to your ear, you can hear the ocean.
About the collection
In preparation for the project, Wilcox examined a collection of more than 1,400 beer bottles, which her husband had amassed over a 30-year period. Of those, 200 of the best labels from 90 brewers in 18 countries made it into the book. The majority of those labels are from craft brewers in the US.
About the Kickstarter campaign
Rather than shop the book around to publishers and agents, Wilcox decided to appeal directly to the art and beer lovers of the world through Kickstarter.com, a funding platform for creative projects. The campaign has a goal of raising $1,128 by March 31, 2016, and with a few days remaining, the project has raised more than $1,500.
Ten percent of the proceeds will go to Cancer Research Institute, a cause that’s a little too near and dear to many of us. Wilcox herself is a double cancer survivor.
The book will be available to backers in July 2016.
